Too Fast

Why is time going in too fast!!!
One wean has gone Awwww
One is still here Huraaah !!!
The area under the tree seems quite bare!
The wee cat's Dusty and Rusty have gone, so I won't wake tonight to a wee purring warm patch under the covers tonight ! or at 5am I won't wake to a meow cry to change litter , feed or stroke.
the extra bedding is in the wash. Weather reports phoned say there is strong winds and heavy snow at the Borders which both my two have to face. But with warm sleeping bags, stove and emergency kit, I do hope they get through.
An update will be posted pre-2010
Ah it's New Years Eve' all is well, folk got to their destinations safely and although we have experienced a bit of overhead tank leak and some damage, all will be OK, cos' people are far more important than mere things

Nearly 2010

What will this week hold?
Apart from Christmas day... yes I know that is on the 25Th...Friday.
A safe return from Belgium of my brother and his wife, who got caught up in the whole Euro Star debacle.
A safer road system that copes with conditions, my sister-in-law sat for hours in the cold last night when a lorry had jack knifed.
A safe journey for my son and daughter who are coming home for Christmas, whaayhaay... canny wait!!!!

Saturday, December 19, 2009

I had been shopping in Byres Road, and very successful it was too.
When I left the house it was a wee bit sleety with some hailstones.
But when I came out of the shops carrying my parcels, umbrella and stuff a blizzard had brewed up, forming horizontal thick snow.
As I trudged up the hill back to my abode and the path got slippier and snow clung to my boots, I honestly couldn't be happier. Winter is supposed to be like this!
I went out dressed for the weather, and appreciated warmth and dryness when I got home, viewing the winter wonderland outside

Wee Small Hours

Do not attempt do do anything when you wake up in the small hours and your brain is not fully engaged!
Example :- Dial your Son's number ( on a wee whim!!!) No answer... why... cos all 'normal' folk are asleep...dah
Anyway was phoned back ( he must know me!!! )had a very good chat considering it was 2.30 am.
Poor lad, normally you only get emergency calls at that hour!!oh dear

So after padding about, trying to make no sound!!!!
Back to bed with a cuppa. ZZZZZ....

Wednesday, Bugless and Busy

Woke up this morning feeling fit as flee!
I've been telling my fighter cells to work hard and attack the alien virus ( which was NOT welcome)
That was something I used to talk to John and Jill about since they were tiny wee. It really worked, very seldom used antibiotics the doctor gave me, as I used to have it just in case, but hardly used it, as both children just got better themselves...
I got up thinking it was Monday...oh no ...it's not.

Gap office cover 9.15-12.oo
Book Project meeting at Headway 2.00
Meeting with project co-ordinator after 4.00

Must rush...places to go...people to see...

I do feel blessed, cos I never though in March 2002 I would ( ever again) be so looking forward to celebrating Christmas and feelling a bit needed and useful.
It's only taken 7 or 8 years!!!

No Time For This!

I've no time for this nonsense, but I seemed to have picked up a lurgy virus and it maybe a 48 hour version ( I hope)

Great...Done ....

Quest success
Kiltmakers Alex Scott & Sons Co Ltd sales@kiltmakers.co.uk
I must confess to getting a lot of help. A lovely wee family affair in Aberdeen have sent this tartan rug across the Atlantic, Even E-mailing me updates of tracking where it is. 2-5 working days is the plan.
So Uncle John in Chicago, I do hope you like this wee present from all your Mackay ( my maiden name ) family relatives.

Thursday, December 10, 2009

The Hunt!

All we (Mackay family in Scotland) want is a tartan rug....Easy you say. on-line ...yes ... but we want it mailed out directly to Chicago USA.
A site I found, great price. Pure Lambs Wool, but only UK posting!! Na good!
Now there is about 5 Mackay tartan's. The one I want is called Mackay
Modern greeny blue, and just the same as we got for my sons kilt.
But I am only at the start of this quest. I'm sure there is a very big American market for tartan.
Results posted ASAP.

Noisy, Flashy and Fun

After a wee short walk along Queen Margaret Drive and down Byres Road Ive realised I don't have to go into town for my Christmas shopping... wehee. Ive won a watch.
Oh by the way, a new shop The Lucky Midden has opened on Maryhill road. I'm a posh girl from Bearsden but, my friends who grew up in tenements will know, checking out bins sometimes brought rewards, thus lucky middens! I haven't been in the shop yet, but controversially they have a golly *** painted on the the awning , must want a complaint and the publicity!
So I bought bells that Velcro round a baby's wrist, jangly, yip, I will be popular. I got plastic fish that flash when they are in contact with water for toddlers, were gonna have a wet Christmas day!
Plenty of craft shops, lots of sales, a bit different, but this is going to be good fun, let the shopping begin.....

Fast Pace...

Och your going to be so fed up with my talk about the 27th August 2010 that you'll give up reading this... I know...
I an really excited, cos I can now believe it's going to be a reality.
I have booked up the Tongue Youth Hostel for our Sponsored Walk on Ben Hope, all funds to Headway Glasgow. Some folk get a twin room and some get a male or female dorm... lucky Eh.
And...it's an English bank holiday, so the place will be seething.
And for anybody out there... I know you might like to come... but by the time all our committee and first comers in Headway said they were interested all the places were filled.
there is plenty to do though, poster, corporate sponsorship, t-shirts, sponsor forms etc....

All Go For The Week Ahead

I was in town today and was served by two young men singing loudly along to the music on the speaker, they were laughing and cheery and so very helpful, Christmas spirit filled me up!. I went in to town a bit HUMBUG-ish and left feeling light FAIRY-ish ( despite rain and a full bus)
On Tuesday evening I'm meeting friends for a meal and a Santa Surprise ( lucky dip).
On Wednesday I'm having Christmas Dinner with my Headway friends.
Now I could be grumpy and think of all the things I have to do... but I caught up with an Omnibus addition of the Archers ....then Desert Island Discs...and....I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue, on radio 4.
A great start to a very good day.

Lazy Sunday

Endless rounds of toast and tea
In bed till 12.30
Buy 2010 file-o-fax my aim today
The sun is not out, cannot make hay
Christmas card writing is my task
Headway Art Class design, my bask
If you get one, small print on the back
Good rhyming skills I definitely lack!

On A Saturday!!!

I got a certificate today, yip...
It says

'Susan Wood has participated fully in this one day training and is competent as a Walk Leader'

Actually I have been helping to lead Heath Walks for a couple of years, with folk from Headway.
I am now covered by insurance and there is some documentation involved, but on the whole, I have been enjoying this activity so much although it has had to be a wee bitty tamer than the mountaineering and climbing I used to do.
Horses for courses though

Family Tree Stuff

I find out there are more and more of my family interested in research!
Well I might( if I can find the time) get into that too. I have an Earl somewhere in my lineage, Polish and Austrian family too on the one side and a whole bunch of Scottish Irish ancestry on the other. Where to start? What might you dig up?
Have you done it yet?
What.... Where....Who.....ahhhh....oooo....

Fist Week

Well I'm getting used the the heating on, wearing a fleece and getting up to speed with everybody and everything.
It feels as if I dropped off the planet for a while....
But everybody is still here and things look pretty much the same.
What 'I' have to keep remembering is though !....
Things that are important to me in recent experience are NOT important to anybody else and even less interesting
Ooh the size of those dinosaur tracks.... EOE how it feels to ride in a helicopter. OUCH, the humiliating experience of falling off a bike!
Get back to the real world girl!!!!

Back On Track!

Yes after a Jet Lagged, stiff and freezing start to getting back on Sunday, I am now less spaced out and more back to 'normal' what ever that is!
I still do 'The Ministry of Funny Walks'thing, but am very pleased as can now get down to sit on a chair and get up by myself on my own woopee. I can now bend to my feet and put on my socks and smalls myself!!!
Started giving out the presents, been with lots of family, have been back to Headway and GAP. Feels such a lot has changed in one small month, but I will, I will, I will catch up.

So Good To Be Home

It is really lovely to see folk even if....
as we landed in Heathrow it poured and as we landed in Glasgow we were hit by an icy wind!!!
This morning there was frost on the ground and we scraped ice off the car. ( we had left the 70 degrees behind with blue skies)
I woke... late for a 10am meeting... Jet Lag excuse!!!
But my back has gone... I must have been holding myself awkwardly to compensate for the bike injuries...
If it didn't hurt so much Id laugh... What a performance. walking and sitting are fine, its all the rest that's the problem
moan over
it is really lovely to be fit, healthy and back,

The Last From USA

I am going to make this the last bit of USA bogging I do. Tomorrow we fly home and think we may get a wee bit of a shock when we get off the plane in Glasgow. It has been dry and warm ( 70 degrees approx) most days, with blue skies, and Glasgow has had different weather... OK damp, cold and grey... but I am so looking forward to seeing everybody, and I hope today to get a print off of a wee selection of my photo's so I wont be too much of a bore.
But still to fit in before we leave, is a shopping session at the sales, a foursome bike ride ( if my stiff joints and scabby elbow and knees allow)and a visit to the parade in Fort Worth . Packing will need to take place on Saturday morning as we don't fly until tea time.
I dont think I have time to fit in Jet Lag when I get back as my diary is full for the first week.
all back to 'normal' then....

A Bevy and a Great Meal.

Yesterday was wasted on me... because....
we went to an evening at the Ruhr Brewery.. http://rahrbrewery.com/
For $5 we got entry and tickets to get 3 pints. this is great value for folk who love real ale and drink a few pints!
I supped a blond ale over the couple of hours we were there and other people used my other tickets. There are lots of people I know who would have loved that opportunity... pity to waste it on me though.
We then went into Fort Worth and had the most delicious Chinese meal. We were all ready and very hungry because we had not eaten all day.

today we had a home cooked equivalent of a Christmas meal, it being 'Thanksgiving Day' a real Chill Out day of relaxing , watching DVD's and the Sales start tomorrow.... WEEEEEEE

A Retrospective Look Back

I have just read through all my blog entries since getting to USA. it counts as quite a good diary though..
I see my aim was to relax... well I have done and seen a lot, but there has also been some chill out days. my arms and face are browner, but not my legs though... they are still peely wally white.

In...Out... shake it all About

So we have decided not to go out for our Thanksgiving meal. It is a holiday for everybody and most places are going to be closed anyway.
We had a lovely home made curry last night and then after a very good restful solid 8 hours sleep , I'm ready for the day! Bring it on...
So shopping for Turkey and stuffing today and potatoes to roast and a few vegetables, not sprouts.... do you like them? We'll make a salmon dish too for our veggie guest. ( he loves fish, well not all vegetarians cut out flesh altogether)
It will be very plain though compared to some, ..saw on telly how to make sweet potato mash with a marshmallow topping... sound yummy.... or yuck....
A bottle of nice red wine a good DVD and we'll be sorted.

Survival

OOOooo AAAaaaa EEEeee
I and the skipper are fine, and I knew this could happen, so was expecting it....
the ground is really hard
So yes we did have a wee incident on Tandy and slipped off the path and both fell and skidded over the concrete path. Luckily no broken bones, just very grazed knees and elbows. We still had a 10 mile ride to get home, maybe just as well as we got back on after assessing damages ( Tandy is unmarked)and cycled back. we were a party of 3 today and there was some emergency breaking involved.
we are all very lucky, and It has not put me off at all.
now to have another cuppa and a big lump of cheese ( my favourite comfort food)
After a good soak I note such pretty colours in bruises... oh yes....
but were all fine and that is the most important thing

The Last Week of 4!

It's is amazing how quickly the last few week have passed. I've had some great experiences, and would love to have a video of my out-takes or blunders, as on thinking back.. in hindsight... they are funny.
I had got my days wrong and thought today was Wednesday! Yesterday I was sure thanksgiving day was on Wednesday 25th, urgggg... but it is Thursday 26th.
I think our party is going out for the meal. I hope to phone Canada where my Aunt, Uncle and cousins celebrate that day in a big way, and have a family gathering ( Like we tend to do on Christmas day) oh wait a minute, have just learned Canadian folk have their day in October,so this isn't going to happen!!awwww
Big sales start at 1 minute past midnight ( a bit like our boxing day sales).
Ooo La La
Am I tempted to do early Christmas Shopping.... well..... let me see..... Naaa... it can wait...

A Housework Day

Another house guest is flying over from the UK today to join our merry band, so I aim to lick this place into shape. A bit of laundry, ironing ( easy with the steam wand) hooving and dusting, especially the huge flat screen HDTV..) a wee walk to the strip mall next door to do a bit of shopping ( this house guest is a vegetarian) This is Texas and the steaks are gorgeous!!!. but the salads are so great too....And there is so much choice and America is now waking up to the 5 a day fruit and veg' idea and even taking on the GREEN issue.

Mimi's

We went to Mimi's for brunch.
I had Pancakes, 2 eggs sunny side up and sausage. I also had Earl Grey tea and the waitress kept refilling my wee individual teapot and I had a wee carousel with all variety of teas.
I finished what I think of as they savoury bit of my brunch, than I really had to.. no really.... I HAD TO try my pancakes and creamy fluffy butter and maple syrup. I only managed one of my 3 pancakes though and just a 1/4 of the amount of butter and a wee tottie amount of the jug of syrup.....
No wonder people have such a weight issue here!!!
Yummm... loevely.....
but I could only do that maybe twice a year, enoughs enough!
!!

just a Relaxing Day

No wild animals, no rules to follow on big cycle days, no helicopters or dinosaur foot steps, just a lazy PJ wearing, TV watching , cuppa drinking day.
Every so often it is good to chill out and take stock and just slow right down. I even just read my book for a couple of hours

Animals, Micro Chips and a Storm

After a good long cycle on the way back we went to Fort Worth Zoo. This very old establishment had been flooded and rebuilt so we saw only the very new building, including wonderful enclosures and like IKEA a pathway to follow that takes you past all the animals. Elephants, Tigers, Gorillas, Giraffes, Rhino's, Hippos, Crocs and so much more. We actually only got 1/2 way round and were all animal-ed out. Some folk must have season tickets, but very good value for $14.
In the evening we went to a golf range. I'm not really into this game, but it was fun as every ball had a micro chip in it and you aimed for marked areas and like our 10 pin bowling, a score register on a computer and we were served food and drink!( pity I could not swing a club... dodgy shoulder)
Then I woke up to such load crashing sounds and flashes of light as a thunder storm raged, it poured more rain than I thought the sky could hold and it;s still raining... Dallas... Texas.....

Thursday, November 19, 2009

Not More Rules....

OK, not rules maybe but good advice!!!
Rule 7... Watch for skipper ducking!!!.... low overhead branches can be sore when they ping! Be very glad again of protection of cycle helmet
Rule 8... wear sun screen. Even if skipper thinks you are in the shade behind them all day..... your not... the sun finds you... bit red this morning.ugggg... should know better!
Another 20 miles clocked up on the trek path. The river crossing saves a two mile detour.... but the narrow path over the river is at the same level as stepping stones. IE on the river, but with no rain the level has gone down.
The normal rout is about 20ft above the river and a really good path.
So we go down a ramp.... quick turn... narrow path... try not to look at gurgling rushing water which passes through below.... quick turn and a push on the up ramp... at last crossing over sit and relax, well pant and get in oxygen.

Bonny Scotland

I think quite often of Scotland, and while I am really enjoying this whole experience, I know where my heart lies. This weather here is turning suddenly cooler. there was a 30 degree temperature drop in one day!
A big push here is for Thanksgiving, its in the shops and on TV. I have no idea what they are thankful for as I have heard no mention of harvest? but Santa, decorative houses and turkey family meals seem to feature. A lot of carnival parades with elaborate floats are planned! a good excuse for a holiday and a big hoo haa I think.

More Tandy Tales

Rule 3... never open your mouth when travelling :- even to shout you've just seen a Snowy Egret, Cormorant and Heron, or to avoid swallowing big bugs a hand sized butterfly or 1.1/2 inch dragonfly
Rule 4...never panic ( a Dad's Army refrain DON'T PANIC....DON'T PANIC needed) even when crossing a 10 lane highway because an underpass is closed off for work!!!
Rule 5... stay with the vehicle at ALL times.
Rule 6.... never make assumptions? take for granted the trek. Hmmm only walkers, runners and bikes Eh!!! well what about 4 cops on black Harley Davidson motorcycles !
A path across the Trinity was cleared of water today, saving a 2 mile detour, so clocked up 20 miles today in a cool fresh wind.
It is really good fun , my fitness and stamina increasing

Postcard

You know how people say ' Been there!, done that! Got the Tee Shirt, well I have, but I was also given a postcard from the Hualapai indian that served us at the Grand Canyon. The tribe own the land and get %50 of all the profit.
Well today I wanted to go the 1/4 mile walk to where you buy a stamp....here back at Fort Worth
There are no pavements (sorry side walks). I have to remember the traffic is on the wrong side of the road and the roadways are so wide. I pass a 'drive in bank', yes no need to get out of your car, cash ATM any normal transactions can be done with your window wound down. Next Playhouse Academy a great big building, but basically just a nursery school.
at last the 'Post Office' it's not UK so they don't call it that. I have no idea, maybe postal service. 98 cents it cost for one postcard. our service has two grades, not theirs.
But everything is such a cultural difference, I just relax and say ...OK

It is Sunday 15th and I'm just back from Las Vegas which is 2 hours behind Fort Worth.

http://www.grandcanyonskywalk.com/

Saw a show :-

Cirque du Soleil Las Vegas.

But I really can't put in words how privileged I feel to have had such a WOW weekend, but a sleep will help..... ZZZ

Mid to West

Sorry cant stop and Blog as flying off to Vegas today( bit braggy sounding eh), normal service will resume on 16th.
Oh and by the way hurricane Ida is South East.... America is soooo vast....
This steamer wand beats standing ironing the old fashion way... once you work out steam only goes up... and letting the heat do it's own work... packing... nay bother.....

Amazing Mud

If you go down to the river bed today, beware of a big surprise!!! In Dinosaur Valley State Park has tracks of creatures that roamed the earth millions of years ago!
I paddled beside them and saw some wonderful sights!

Dinosaur Valley State Park contains some of the best preserved dinosaur tracks in the world.

The Dinosaur Park features a unique outdoor museum setting. While most museums have dinosaur skeletons, our realistic life-size dinosaur replicas show skin and color variations to give a better understanding as to how they looked when alive. These statues range in size from the 6-foot long Velociraptor to the 40-foot long T-Rex.

As you walk through a tree-lined nature trail the dinosaurs sit back from the trail, situated among plants, trees and rocks, making it easy to imagine real dinosaurs in a natural environment.

The Dinosaur Park is an educational and fun place, where everyone can learn about the majestic animals that ruled our earth for over 150 million years.

Brazil and Japan

Two very interesting meals out!
A visit to Texan Brazilian Restaurant. Meat is served from BBQ type sewers where a slice is carved off and you have a wee pair of tongs to grab hold of the meat and place it on your plate. You have a wee beer mat size circle RED on one side and GREEN on the other if you want more or have had enough, so similar to the British carvery, but you don't need to get up.
A Sushi bar, the most tasty food except I don't like raw fish or prawns. but what I did have was delicious. Try eating rice with chop sticks when you are hungry! my daughter showed me how to fill a wee bowl and with this up at my face I scooped and shoveled the rice into my mouth, and I DID NOT use my fork uh uh. I had vegetable dumplings for starters ( which I speared with my sticks) and kuriaky beef
which I eventually learned to eat Japanese style

TRUST

Tandy clocked up 20 miles today and it was a lovely trip that I thoroughly enjoyed

Adventures from a crew members point of view!!!

you have to have %100 trust.
Imagine having to go down a steep ramp then turn which means a tilt and then go through bollards that are there to stop motor bikes going on the trail, the space is just wide enough for a bike to pass.
so it's whizz.... tilt.... squeeze... now would you hold your breath? shut your eyes?, but I am getting braver!
The trail narrows to 6 feet wide for some stretches. handle bars are about 2 feet wide.... we pass other bikers at speed.... use your imagination. I do look ahead often to see what is coming.... then sigh with relief... pew!!!
point of interest....
A mounted police person. Well a cop on a horse,a black stetson on and a big smile and a friendly wave.
A miniature railway where we beat the train parallel to our route and friendly waves from all ( I can wave back with 2 hands)
A lovely breeze, do not stop too long because the bugs will eat you.

Mad, Mental or Motivated

Ive decided on the pet name of Tandy for the lovely new machine, which is a doorway into getting around in a way I could never do walking.
It's very challenging when we build up speed and go for an up ramp where we maybe have to go off the path and cross over a bridge to cross the river Trinity.
You know when you stand up on the peddles and pull at the handlebars, and you use every ounce of strengh to get as far up as you can.
Half way up a rough grassy steep bank we usually stop where the path runs out and dismount ( we have to lift Tandy over a low fence(well I do very little actually, the skipper does most of the work)
But my task is just to balance and walk over the bridge... easy... peasy... I hear you say.... Nuh!
First of all I am so dizzy especially after the extreme effort of the last few moments, second of all I am on a slope that I should wear crampons for. Well if I do fall and tumble down the slope , at least I have a helmet on!
I'll get used to this.... I have done it 1/2 a dozen times now
The pleasures far outweigh the difficulties and anyway non ABI folk will never understand, It's just my self driven task to get on with it!

Monday, November 9, 2009

And There's More....

2 simple rules
Rule 1. There is a skipper and a crew member and clear demarcation.
rule 2. Obeying without question or argument

Today this outfit are the proud owners of a tandem... yip folks I will have to bore you with more!
Well my fitness levels are good and buying was a better deal than renting for a month.
Down Town Fort Forth and Sundance Square
A 16 mile trip with a stop midway where the trail comes out at the city court and Correction Centre... nice Eh...
Freshly squeezed orange juice and an apple and Cinnamon freshly made bagel...
a very good day
.

Goats- in The day Of....

You must go and see the Movie 'The Men Who Stare at Goats'. it is such a funny, laugh out loud film, with Ewan McGreggor, George Cluny, Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges.
So it may be out here in the USA before you get it in Scotland , but I would urge you to go and see it, good therapy, you will come out in a different mood than when you went in... guaranteed.....

Once More into the Breach!!!

Oh no... here comes another 'Tandem Tale'
Imagine being on a Bob Sleigh ride, or a lough race for an hour or so, with your senses being all scrambled. Then stand up and walk!!!
It's really quite funny but trying to walk after I get off the bike is a bit like that, or after you twirl round and then stop!
And that after having no drink!!!
The nearest sensation of a similar nature Pre-ABI, was when I used to take off my ski boots and walk... really weird.

EH !!!!

I talking to my uncle Alaistair in Toronto on the, Canada on the phone. I was saying that I'd seen no signs of bonfires or fireworks commemorating Guy Fawkes!... "well that would because your in America and that is about blowing parliament up in London"... oh....
But you see for Halloween there was so many adults dressed up, but maybe not 'dressing up' as the young men here is wear stetsons and leather cow boy boots all the time!.
So many differences and they don't even use English properly, making up words... we are do it right... of course....

8 and counting

I am really pleased, I got 8 hours sleep last night and didn't wake till 5am ( which is still too early but at least not 3am) my sleep is more or less solid and I don't have to creep quietly about the house any more!!
I have just read through my postings on this blog since arriving here. I do go on about about the tandem a lot!!! Well it is great!!!
Sad.... it goes away today, back to to the cycle shop we hired it from!! Awwww
This morning though, after 10am when the rest of the household will get up , we will go for a 5 mile ride. We are going to IHOP( international house of pancakes) . Yummy breakfasts including fluffy pancakes with maple syrup to drizzle on the top.
I am going to have to be bad... again.!

Oh what is that shhhhh noise outside.....
A look out on the balcony tells me.....
it's the sprinklers coming on... oh my...

A Great way to See Around

We went a walk the other day, and cycled the route again today.
I hadn't realised how much work it was just to walk, and I also didn't realise how much of the time I look down at the path ahead to see where to step.
So I was able to look around at all the house styles , watch the wildlife and look up at the sky when jets or helicopters flew by and not take a few moments to get my balance again (looking up means I have to stop, and make me sooo dizzy.
It was a lovely day, sunny with blue skies and about 75 degrees, with a light breeze.

Marble Slab Co

Ice cream American style.... yummmmm

We went for a walk last night to an Ice Cream shop. I had cheesecake flavoured ice cream in a cup shaped cone coated inside with thick white chocolate and covered outside with hundreds and thousands called sprinkles..
I was bad! very bad.. it's going to take lots of cycle miles to work this off.. but it was really good!

NETFLIX

DVD's by post care of the service by NETFLIX after ordering online films come the next day!!!
So tonight's viewing is... 'To Kill a Mocking Bird'.
Gregory Peck, as the lawyer and it's just a good story. I read the book recently and have tried for ages to get the film. FOP was charging £17 to buy it!

Think I've Cracked It !!!

See this time zone thing? It may not rank as important to most people, but just now to me it's quite high up there!!
Well I went to bed at 9pm, a bit later than I have until now. Woke up at 4am, not 3am as before, so at last things are moving in the right direction.
My aim is to stay awake till 10pm and not wake till 7am, ambitious Eh... this is me 6 days into a months stay and I hope I achieve that.
I do know I will have to reverse the process going back to Scotland.
The day after I get back my busy schedule begins again!
On the 30th of November I have a 10am and 12.30 commitment.
Anyway thoughts of what is ahead of me can wait. I am just going to enjoy being here, and since it's 6am I have just time for another cuppa before a wee doze and then a shower and then the day begins.

so Hot

Give me air!!!!
It is really hot in the afternoon sun, and inside my daughters apartment is hotter than outside where at least there is a breeze.
out side on the balcony where hudreds of ladybirds, with red backs and black spots maybe 13 or so ( not that I counted them)
Did you know they bite!!!
Anyway I was on the phone to my Mum and she thinks they may be Harlequine Ladybirds that she has read about.
the ones at home are wee and have 5 or 9 spots?
American bugs have to one better!!!!

Laaazzzzeee

This is one of those days when on holiday, that you get into the groove of relaxing.
It's 8.45am and I'm going stop thinking in the UK time zone where I add 6 hours all the time. I'm still in my fluffy dressing gown watching American TV ( it's awful) and with no plans for they day... I don't care.....
This has got to be the biggest contrast to my voluntary work in Glasgow, where every day is a whir of activity ( by choice)
I have set up a new skype account and hope to contact a few family members around 2pm this afternoon. but that is my biggest plan for today... and maybe to get a meal ready when daughter get's home from work.
It's cool now, but will get hotter as they day proceeds till it gets up to 75 degrees and there are clear blue sky's.
Och and I hear it's a wee bitty dreigh at home..EH

Chill Baby Chill

On being at the back of a tandem!
It's a wonderful experience, and I'm really enjoying it.
We went a longer cycle today. To the Botanical Gardens about 3 miles away.
Ive learned to relax, I can lift my hand and scratch my face now!
I can stand up on the peddles and help get us up steep inclines ( which defeated me before)
I can cope with having no control on speed direction!
I can understand verbal communication re- bumps and gear changes.
but I can even close my eyes when we whizz over narrow bridges.
I can watch soaring birds and playful squirrels.
I love it.

A Need For Shade

Yesterday we chose to walk in a shady place. It was late afternoon and still 75 degrees.
We walked along a route for a few miles that follows a creek. You could see the high water mark a couple of meters up from the normal flow. They had tornado's and storms just before we came.
A cool front is on it's way, so we may need to batten down the hatches?

The Wee Small Hours

Och, my body clock tells me it's time to get up, even my regular ablution's in the 'WASHROOM' (note the correct USA lingo) happen at 3am where in Scotland it would be 9am.
So it is fun to play on my blog and keep quiet and busy and I hope get tired and go back to bed.
I have resorted to having a wee afternoon nap so I can stay up till 8pm, when I just fall asleep in front of the telly.

A Bicycle Made for Two

Yesterday we had a lovely ride on our hired tandem bike. It's much more relaxing for me not to be concerned about having to steer ( the path we take has a big drop to one side and a fast flowing river below). I used to stop when ever walkers or bikers passed as I cannot judge distance or speed and its just too distracting. But at the back I can now enjoy all the benefits of being on a bike, without all the stress, and a bonus is I can look at all the wild life and views as much as I like.
It's a very long heavy beast though, but like having a baby or a dog is quite a good conversation piece!
If I can sort out 'how to' I might be able to post a picture

'These Boots Are Made For Walking'

A few years ago my son and his wife , my daughter and her boyfriend and I spent a lovely couple of days in the lake district. I bought a really comfy pair of trainer like cortex walking boots. I have enjoyed some rough walks through moore bogs and puddles with my feet always staying dry. when I feel a wee bit wobbly I have been so impressed with the confidence I get from secure stable treads and sound protection.
But I had to give them up as worn out and throw them away before I came to the USA.
So I was saying I need to go to a mountaineering or climbing shop. Texas is dead flat, no really!!! you can see the curve of the earth from here!!!.
'Mum.... I think you'll find a scarcity of mountaineering shops in Texas'....dah....
Och well a trekking outdoor shop OK

New Set of Wheels

Exciting development....
got a new bike.... it's a tandem. Well I hired one
One of the problems I have when cycling, apart from being slow, is that when runners or other cyclist come towards me, I cannot gage distance or speed and visually it's very distracting and as they pass, I kinda wobble. so my strategy is to put my feet down and stop.
My daughter quite often shouts at me ' keep going...Mum' but I wimp out and stop.
So this is somewhat of a good solution.
The front rider is OK visually, and I get the pleasure of enjoying a bike ride.
bonus for my is that I no longer have to worry about the big drop on one side of the path and the fast flowing water below.

The Early Worm

I woke up at about 3am USA time but 9am back in bonny Scotland. so considering jet lag I thought that wasn't bad.
by 7am I walked round to the local Starbucks and had a decaff skinny latte and a bagel with cream cheese. hmmm
On the way round there the parking lot was black with large birds walking about, the very noisy birds shrieked, and swooped from the trees all around too, and with a pink sky background made quite a sight,
I had left the rest of the household enjoying their beauty sleep , while at that early hour the coffee shop was busy with people on laptops, bikers and runners. the staff were all dressed up for Halloween.
I tiptoed back not to wake folk up.

Home Again, Home

I have so enjoyed my stay up in Kinlochbervie. It has seen some unusual twists and turns.
The stillness watching my son plough up and down the loch!
The loudness of being woken by rutting stags!
The beauty of a starry sky!
The incredible scenery of seascape and mountains!
The amazing locals and the laugh we all had together.
The sound of my son singing and playing his own trumpet, (he does own one, which we bought when he was about 12 years old, because he saw the Salvation Army playing 'Silent Night' from his bed room window and he said " I will do that next year" and he did. When Sally Ann came round the next year, he played his trumpet to them out the window and they cheered)... cute eh...
Ahhhh

Idylic

At the foot of Ben Arkle and along the shores of Loch Stack we walked a track that took us over bridges of fast flowing rivers and babbling brooks, seeing herds of deer and sighting wild birds as we went. Eventually the low cloud level lifted and we were able to see Ben Arkle in it's full glory with the great scree band and John described the walking path up to the summit. We walked on to a Forrest are were treated to a gorgeous scent of pine, then through the trees I could glimpse flashes of white and hear a loud roar. A waterfall and a natural quarts stone bridge in a magical setting of Autumn colours red rowan berries and clear blues and greens of the pools in between the falls
On the way home in the car we had listened to highland music played on a penny whistle and chanter and it really suited all our surroundings
Charlie the coordinater of GAP was doing his DJ ing on Oban FM each day this week from 3-4pm, the Mod being from there this year. I just got back in time to have a wee listen in online www.clanradio.com

Ceilidh house

Yesterday afternoon Flora had invited my to a lunch club organised by social services for the local over 65's
a grand new Health Centre building in the village was built a few years ago and local people fought hard to have a community aspect joined to that as well ( the Council didn't believe there would be a need or demand to qualify for this!!!). The Ceilidh ( gathering) house is fabulous. a huge big room decorated like a home with paintings by local artists, a real fire, arm chairs, a carpet, and best of all a real buzz from the folk attending. I expected a really sedate group...oh no, they laughed and joked and were scandalous. I spent 3 hours there and had the best meal ever cooked by local women employed to keep the local older people happy. I just wish there was a similar facility for my own Mum and Dad back at home. Buses and taxis took people there and home from Richonic, Durness, and other places. Kinlochbervie is like a hub and all the villages round about use the health centre and ceilidh house.
This week has just flown past.
Back in Glasgow Headway had a fundraising quiz night last night at the Griffin pub and I'm dying to hear how it went. I just hope their night was as good fun as my day out with the older population of locals

Interesting

Last night I was at a Friendship meeting.
The talk was given by Susan Brown ( 4 ft) the minister of Dornock cathedral. She may be small in stature but a very interesting and charismatic speaker. Her husband is Chaplin of Raigmore hospital. There were 20 or so women ranging from 40 ish to 80 ish and I was one of the younger ones.... don't laugh....
We chatted about changes in schools from when the listeners chalked on slate ( and they did!) loss of respect for elders and changes in way's to communicate. Then we went on to discuss why Churches has diminishing congregations.?
A bible story was told in 4 different formats , one being a puppet show.
Today I am going for lunch with Flora, who can bring a guest, you have to be 65 to attend.
tell you how I get on later...

White Out

We walked from Sandwood Bay car park this afternoon onto the hill which was completely shrouded in mist ( a white out). we arrived at the swimming pool, good it was open - Loch Balchrick. so I settled down with my waterproof mat to sit on, three layers of warm cloths, and over me was a igloo type thing called bothy2 ( John takes on the hill in case children develop hypothermia) its great bubble keeping out the rain and wind, with a wee window to watch the swimmer.
I was really warm while my bold lad did 22 laps and 20 minutes of fresh water swimming.
then we went to visit a friend and had home made scones...
yip another typical day up in the north.

Afternoon Tea

My son and I entertained a neighbour this afternoon. Flora's husband's family have lived in this area for generations. On Wednesday have been invited to lunch with local folk, at the local church, then on Tuesday evening am going to a friendship talk about Dunblane cathedral.
But just heading up the hill to break camp and hope we find out the tent from last night is dry. it never rained once!!! Boo hoo.....

Ooo Aaa found a lot of deer tracks round the tent and some scrape marks, like a bull does before it charges......
I'm going to sleep well in the cottage tonight ZZZzzz....

Starry Starry Night

Don McLean must have meant the kind of night sky we had last night. Up here with no light pollution, the stars shine out so well on a totally black sky, we could clearly see the milky way and other galaxies.
cosily wrapped up in my 4 season sleeping bag I was suddenly awoken to what in my drowsy dream state sounded like grisly bears fighting just outside the tent!
But NO it was stags doing their rutting bark, roar, growl noise, very loudly and near by.
I lay their thinking ( they will smell that humans are in the tent surely) but I was thinking a huge male with big antlers.... and then drifted back to sleep.
back at the cottage I have had my porridge and cuppa and look forward to another day of adventure

Wow... amazing, have just watched my brave( or mad) lad swim for 20 minutes in Balchrick Loch, I sat taking lots of photo's, but just as my son was playing at hiding underwater to avoid the photo shoot, my battery went... oh dear and I need the USA adapter because I bought the camera in America.
We are going to camp out tonight... update to follow
Just pitch a great new hooped 3 man tent about 1/2 mile up a peat track from the cottage, so we are going to test it out tonight. hope the wind blows hard and it rains ( I love the sound of both, when your in a cosy sleeping bag.)( little chance EH...)Two pictures are posted on Flickr, but I cannot seem to put a link. A Wale of aTime

Off for an Adventure.
Margaret and I went for a day's outing to Fort William ( we were allowed out for the day!!! without a carer in sight)
It started with an early start on the train from Queen Street station at 8.21am. Margaret only just got there in time and I grabbed her hand and at 8.20am ran ....( bus delay)
Flask of tea, banana and lovely scenery and great company and we fairly saw the journey in.
We had a boat trip on Loch Linny ( with or against the waves was chilly but calm... but across and the swell, meant up down wobble ooh). There was a Whale in the loch... and seals... but we saw nothing.
but it was fab! thank goodness we bought gloves and took a brolly!!!
Lovely pub grub and a drowsy journey home...
A hot bath soak.. bed and zonk.... next I knew it was 8am the next morning and the first full nights sleep since my ABI in 2002... Ahhhh

Catch A Falling Star!!!

I used to love singing that song as a child ( save it for a rainy day... ahhh) can you hear the tune, are you singing?...
Anyway, back to earth with a thump.
for a few days I was contemplating doing :

Mount Toubkal Challenge 2010

This is an 8 day trek though the high Andes.......It was for me a real challenge... but OK 'um no up to it...yet !'
So in mind Ive thought about a mini expedition to Ben Hope in Scotland over a long week end with maybe 6 folk doing a sponsored climb for Headway in 2010

Anyone up for it?

Magic Wand

I wish I had a magic wand. People all around me seem to be dropping like flies. Cough , sneeze , wheeze, hiccough.....
Dare I write this down, even think this and temp fate!!!!
Away bad bugs Shoo, (like Gandalf in Lord of The Ring says ' You are not wanted here'!)
, I seem to be blessed with a strong healthy
immune system! After teaching kids in Easterhouse, Blackhill and Faifly and seeing more snotty noses than anybody should in a lifetime ( tempting fate again)
No..... strong fighter cells get to work and kill the enemy, think positive.

Sailing the Ocean Blue

Last night I was chatting to my cousin Jeanne on her boat. She is sailing round the world and was at the Canary Isles. Isn't Skype fab!
In her Web site http://synereida.livejournal.com/ you can see a photo of a big-eyed squid she found on deck as she was sailing out of Puerto Calero, Lanzarote, Islas Canarias( I have the photo, but have had a problem posting any pictures recently BOOHOO)

Caravaning

I'm off tomorrow to stay in a caravan.
I love the sound of rain ...pitter..patter on the roof when your cosy and warm inside!
I love to lie in my sleeping bag on the bed listening to the wind howling and the trees creaking and groaning near by.
But the sun IS going to shine!! It is NOT going to rain!!!
Im going to read, do jigsaws, play my Nintendo and chill!!!

In The Middle Of The Night

Sometimes every so often, I find myself wide awake in the wee small hours. I find my old friend the Blog is always there waiting for me.
Should I make a cuppa, or phone my daughter in USA 6 hours behind us. It is strange to think of other people round the world having a lovely day, while were in the dead of night.
I seem to have a really busy week and Tuesday is going to have 3 events... but it finishes with a lovely meal out with friends at Topolinos in Sauchiehall street then 'Dinner Ladies' ( was on TV) at the Kings.
So I'll finish now, take a cuppa to bed and read a little of a great book Ive got just now, goodnight...
..zzzzz

A really Good Weekend

On Saturday I was in Blacks and bought a pair of foot wear thingies
It is an outdoor shop but the things I bought were 'slippers' Well they are designed for after skiing or climbing and slip on so easily and are padded!!!
I spend my days visiting the Arctic, where I freeeeze, and then I am in the Sahara where I swelter. This world travel is exhausting and I can flip from too hot, to too cold in seconds.
Thus the slippers.... as my feet are like blocks of ice or burning up. Onoffonoffonoff........

Warm Heart

Yesterday a sight out of the bus window fair warmed my heart.
A grandmother was supervising a toddler who standing on tiptoes on his buggy stretching up posting letters. He had quite a pile, but was doing them one by one. how lovely. I feel quite excited when I get a letter!
It is all very well having E-mail, text and the phone and even Skype, but these days we hardly ever send plain snail mail.
I do love getting a post card, a letter or package and enjoy the feeling of holding the item in my hand and the anticipation of opening it!!!
Not that this is a hint... naaa.

The Sun It Is A-Shining

When the sun is shining, anything seems possible.
Imagination takes flights of fancy.
when I was out today I noticed a bus passing that was on its way to Fort William.
Oh I thought, fancy that, blue skies, a bit of good scenery, live life to the full! just do it.....!
Certainly don't say 'another day perhaps'
So provisional plans have been made Och Aye.

Well Rested and Chipper Again

After a night and a day when I was the most un-energetic dough ball imaginable, I am at last able to say I am near my normal annoying self again.
Ready for the week ahead, I feel up to wreaking my usual havoc.
My daughter is in New york to see the tennis live, envy!!!! envy!!!!
My son is sailing on a beautiful Scottish loch, envy!!!!envy!!!!
But I am meeting the bosses I used to work for when I was a teacher. We are going to Bobar at the old Grosvenor Hotel on Byres Road to be 'Ladies who lunch'
Later on in the week I go to East Kilbride to talk to people from the Health board and Care industry about my strategies for self management of my ABI. This is with Long Terms Condition Alliance(LTCA)Lots to talk about then, as its a way of life now, but like driving it's quite hard to break it down and explain to others. When I type up my ideas I may just post them here.

Duvet Day

Some days after a very busy week I just need a Duvet day, these are one of those.
It seems an effort to talk, or do anything. I have dragged my self to my computer as I had some e-mails to send, but I hope you appriciate the effort Eh
Energy burst spent..... back to my cover and dwam, not even a good book.... maybe the radio and a cuppa....yawn.....

Coudn'a Hardly Breath!!!

I use public transport nearly every day, it's handy, gets my out and about and for me is free. Because I am registered partially sighted I get all my travel free in Scotland. Bus, train, subway and ferry, good Eh. I would not be able to be so active as a volunteer if this wasna so!!!
Anyhow today this guy sat beside stinking of alcohol, cigarettes, BO and pee. YUCK.
How long can you hold you breath!!!
Can you just breath out!!!!
Gulping fresh air when I got off the bus, I thought to myself.... poor lad... does he know.
Chiding myself I thought, just be glad I can have a daily shower and put fresh clothes on, maybe other folk are not so lucky.
Or.... do not use the bus if you stink!!!!
I am such a snob Eh.... but honest

I hate Spiders

What!!! Why!!! I turn it to this wobbly frightened wean when faced with dealing with a spider!
I know they are small ( this one had a 1" diameter I. E. huuuuuge)they are harmless! I have never been bitten, stung or chased by one.
They are very unpredictable though and run very fast and you suddenly cross them unexpectedly. Ohhhh Ahhhh.
well today I came across an ENORMOUS Spider in a sink, just as I was entering to have a pee ( sorry too much information) there it was. I had to get a paper cup and some paper and be very brave and after catching the wee beastie I took him over to some grass to escape,
Ihe reason for my bravery was that I was with a girl who is very nearly blind. Just the thought of her going innocently to wash her hands and the spider unseen...... it is not Worth thinking about

A Truth

This is a short paragraph I have given for a Headstart event I am going to soon.

I started on a life time’s journey following a car accident in 2002 where I received many injuries, including an acquired brain injury (ABI).
Just as well we do not know what is ahead of us! I loved my job as an advisor in Argyll and Bute Education Service. This had involved a lot of driving, for example going from Glasgow to Campbelltown and back in one day.
Following the accident I was initially in a wheelchair unable to walk. I had to learn to talk again and it took me quite a long time to come to terms with the fact that I would not go back to that job, or in fact life as I had known it.
But 7 years on I am still improving and gaining confidence, employing coping strategies that help me to live as full and active life as possible. Not the life I had dreamed of for my future, but one with quality nevertheless.
I am currently Chairperson of Headway Glasgow. This organisation has played a very significant role in supporting me through the whole process, and I my aim is to help by supporting others who may be involved in a similar journey

Fancy Meeting You here

Sometimes you just feel your in the right place at the right time. My friend Margaret and I were just walking up Byres road when I recognised a person I knew. This was a new member of our Headway group, but I didn't know his name. But as I introduced him I just had to be honest as say ' sorry I don't know your name' (sometime it just pay's to be honest)
So with lot's of enthusiasm we got into a long conversation and shared a bit of our experience, and I hope helped Jim to see that although recovery is slow it always continues. you never get back to where you were pre-ABI, but life always gets better and quality of life carries on improving.
Jim had his acquired brain injury a few years ago, so it's still quite recent for him, but an important job for us veteran ABIist's is to role model what is possible after 10, 20 or more years
